House Ilàrdi traces its roots back to the old country of Adra, more specifically to the Duchy of Raddusa where they were the ruling power for several centuries. Those loyal to the one true Duke of Raddusa, Aleksander Ilàrdi, have found themselves cast out following a violent coup that saw House Ilàrdi unseated.
The lineage of House Ilàrdi runs deep and true solely within Adra until nearly 120 AC. Those of House Ilàrdi had lived in Adra for centuries, yet it was not until Cyrus Ilàrdi that the family would stake its name upon the history books of their homeland. Cyrus was the youngest of 4 siblings, the oldest being the sole girl. All 3 sons were conscripted during a war between the Kingdom of Adra and a bordering power, many years prior to the Cataclysm. Both of Cyrus’ older brothers lost their lives, leaving Cyrus as the sole male heir of the family.
Cyrus saw much success, climbing the ranks of the Adranyi military. After the war he was granted the title of Warden of Raddusa where he ruled for many years, becoming well known for his charitable work and fairness. It was upon Cyrus’ death bed that the King of Adra, King Isaak, bestowed the title of Duke upon Cyrus I to not only avoid a power struggle, but to ensure the stability of a region that had seen tremendous growth in his lifetime.
Many lifetimes passed, yet throughout them all it was undeniable that House Ilàrdi was known for its integrity, fairness and staunch loyalty to the crown. The family ruled peacefully, for the most part, focusing on the arts, trade and philosophy to cement Raddusa as a cultural strongpoint within the Kingdom of Adra. It was not until little more than a century after the Cataclysm that danger would befall House Ilàrdi.
When the Crown fell in AC 117, House Ilàrdi felt the sting almost immediately. The Duke of Raddusa, Iosif I, was among those that were targeted by the insurgents. Iosif, his wife Thalia, and their daughter-in-law Kyra were all lost in the bloodshed of that fateful day. Being that Raddusa sat upon the coast of the mainland, those loyal to the Duke were able to escape with relative ease into the sea. Of Cyrus’ I lineage, only Aleksander III, his younger sisters and his three young children escaped to the Isles of Adra. Aleksander and his entourage resided within the Isles for several months, but opted to take to the sea when the food situation grew dire.
Into the horizon they sailed, in search of new lands.
In search of a new home.
To be Ilàrdi is to be unwavering in your duty, a shield upon the backs of your countrymen. To rule is not to lead blindly and expect unwavering faith in return, but to extend your hand and be welcomed just as you welcome. It is to understand that the burden must not only fall upon the commoner, that you are not safe from sacrifice should it mean the betterment of your people. It is to stand by them, when faith in the name Ilàrdi is all they have left, no coffers of gold or sapphires to back their words. It is to bring the Adranyi to Athon and see that they have a future once more.
They say that knowledge is power, and it is true that a man who does not understand the very essence of the question he is being asked cannot answer truthfully. They may spout half-complete responses that seem fair at the surface, yet garnish no favor or will with those the very decision affects. But that is not the Ilàrdi. They understand that knowledge is no more useful with wit than wit is without knowledge. To be anything short of those things is considered a shame. Be it book smart, street smart, or a mixture of both the Ilàrdi keep their minds just as sharp as their blades.
When a Ilàrdi is born it is said that the oceans thrash in defiance and that the sky threatens to open up into a divine storm. While this is entirely false and little more than a wife's tale, a sense of militancy and devotion has been instilled upon the bloodline of Cyrus. All those born to the House of Ilàrdi understand that they have a greater purpose then they may realize. Should they not be next in line to the reins of the family they do not sit around plotting and scheming, but instead they tackle the next best thing they can. Generals, guild leaders and free thinkers they become, a vote of confidence in the society they claim part of.
The Ilàrdi value actions and results over empty words and false promises. Those who seek glory and success to not sit idly by, but instead chase their dreams and create their own luck. There is no greater reward than success, no feeling lesser than that of failure. It is the Ilàrdi way to see things through, and to support and encourage those around them in their own journeys and aspirations.
The descendents of Cyrus I typically find themselves sharing significant similarities. Curly, dark hair rests atop chiseled faces that come in various shades ranging from honey to amber. Curious green eyes peer out into the world, resting just under thick brows.
The Ilàrdi tend to adorn themselves in light, less obstructive clothing in hues of purples, browns, blues and greens: a statement of their former status back in Raddusa. Men often wear little more than sturdy, yet breathable pants and an open front shirt, while women tend to wear flowing dresses that ripple in the breeze of the countryside. Though their clothes tend to be relatively simple they make up for it with their use of accessories. It is rare to find a member of the Ilàrdi family without some sort of golden jewelry such as earrings, facial piercings, bracelets and armbands, or some sort of fixture pinned upon their clothing.
